What is Naprapathy ?

Naprapathy is a branch of medicine, (manual medicine) that focuses on the  evaluation and treatment of neuro-musculo-skeletal conditions. Doctors of Naprapathic Medicine are connective tissue specialists who use the science of Neuromyology (the study of nerve and muscle). As background, naprapathy was first introduced by Dr. Oakley Smith, (a chiropractor) around early 1900’s. He developed a distinct set of techniques different from chiropractic which he called naprapathy (napra = relieve, path = suffering). The theory of subluxation of the vertebrae is one of the principle differences between naprapathy and chiropractic. Dr Smith maintained that any restriction/impingement in this area could cause musculo-skeletal dysfunction and even organ system pathology.  He felt that at the root of dysfunction was this restriction in the assemblage of ligaments composing the vertebral bonds.

Naprapaths are connective tissue specialists. We use a set of specific and unique manipulation techniques and neurological tests. Our training is similar to medical students in many areas, though we do not do hospital rotations.  We do not prescribe drugs or perform any invasive procedures.  We are highly trained in natural/botanical medicine, nutritional consulting and supplementation. Naprapaths are also trained in detecting more serious conditions (i.e. cancer, surgical candidates) that may produce similar symptoms, but would require a more aggressive medical intervention. These patients are typicaly referred back to their primary care physicians. We may also order any radiological or blood work we feel necessary.

How does a Naprapth differ from other practitioners ?

Naprapaths differ from massage therapists in education and technique.  Massage therapists receive less education and training, (Naprapths have roughly twice the required hours), and they are not licensed as doctors in the state of Illinois.  Naprapaths differ significantly from chiropractors in technique; chiropractors focus on skeletal manipulation and naprapaths focus on connective tissue.

In addition to naprapathic techniques and botanical medicine treatments, I use trigger point release, exercise rehab, infrared light therapy, ultrasound, electric stimulation and deep tissue massagers. I have recently developed an interest in cranial-sacral treatment.

I found that many of my patients had already been to either a chiropractor or message therapist; some found they were uncomfortable with the high velocity chiropractic techniques and some needed more than massage therapy. These patients sought out naprapathy as an alternative. We all have a unique place in quality integrative patient care.  I may add that among my patients were chiropractors, massage therapists, M.D.’s, and podiatrists.

What is your philosophy on patient care and treatment ?

My approach to patient care is to treat the entire individual to remove restrictions and allow the body to heal itself.  I consider their general health, lifestyle and needs.  I stress patient education, nutrition, exercise, and disease prevention.  Effective treatment often involves communication and collaboration with the patient’s primary physician or referral to a specialty. I am a firm believer in Integrative Health Care. My goal is to create partnerships involving the patients and their healthcare providers; all contributing to the long term health of the patient.

Why would I refer a patient to as Naprapath ?

Some patients have chronic pain and choose not to be treated with drugs or surgery. You now have an option for the patient. Working in conjunction with a Naprapath, you can lower the dose of medication or postpone surgery. Many of these patients will still require surgery and you may prescribe Naprapthic treatments for post-surgical rehab.

Would a Naprapath be in competition with my practice ?

NO !  In fact Naprapaths will refer patients back to you and provide new cases that require further medical workups and diagnosis.
